Key messages
A laser treatment of the legs takes about 45 minutes to an hour and costs between CHF 490 and 550. On average, 6 to 8 laser treatments are required. There should be a gap of about 6 weeks between treatments. Starting from the 7th treatment, you benefit from a 10% discount.
Laser treatment can cause some pain (but there is numbing cream available) and is less painful than waxing, epilating or plucking. In addition, a tingling or pinching sensation may occur with dark hair and dense hair growth.
Advantages of permanent hair removal
What are the advantages of permanent laser hair removal on the legs?
Laser hair removal results in permanently smooth legs without the hassle of shaving, redness and ingrown hairs. The improved hygiene of smooth skin means that blemishes occur less frequently. This can have a positive effect on your self-confidence. Enjoy the comfort and use the time you gain for yourself and the important things in life.
General
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal uses a diode laser that reacts to the pigment in the hair. It automatically emits impulses that reach the hair root via the hair. As a result, the hair root dies and the surrounding cells become desolate. The hair falls out after about 2 weeks and can no longer grow back.
How often do the legs need to be lasered?
A total of about 6 to 8 treatments are necessary for permanent hair removal. The darker the hair, the better the laser treatment works and the fewer treatments are necessary. In contrast, more treatments are usually necessary for light hair.
How long does laser hair removal take?
A single laser treatment of the legs takes about 45 minutes to an hour. After each treatment, a waiting period of about 6 weeks must be observed. The entire process takes about 8 to 12 months.
How good are the results of laser hair removal?
After 6 to 8 treatments, you will be more than 90% hair-free at the treated site for several years. Over time, fine hairs may grow back. These can be removed with a single follow-up treatment.
Before laser treatment
What needs to be considered before treatment?
Do not pluck hairs before and between treatments, as this can affect the success of laser hair removal. Since the laser reacts to pigments, you should not expose the treated area to the sun or tan it in any other way.
How do I prepare for laser treatment?
You should shave your legs one to two days before laser treatment. Stubble or longer hairs can have a negative effect on the result. Please do not wax or epilate, as laser treatment is only effective if the hair roots are present.
What does the dermatologist need to check before the treatment?
Before the first treatment, we check whether there are any factors that preclude laser treatment and explain the process and possible risks to you.
How do tattoos affect laser treatment?
We cannot perform laser hair removal directly on tattoos because the laser reacts to the pigments. We therefore cover tattoos and any dark birthmarks before treatmen
Can I get a laser treatment for my legs if I am pregnant?
No, as a precaution we do not perform laser hair removal during pregnancy.
During and after treatment
Who performs the treatment?
Dr. U. Büttiker, MD, carries out the preliminary examinations and the trial treatment for medical indications. Otherwise, the laser treatments are usually carried out by Alexandra Brotschi or Justine Beugger. Both are long-standing medical practice assistants at the Bern Bubenberg dermatologist and are very experienced in laser hair removal.
What happens at the first treatment appointment?
After we have made sure that there are no reasons that preclude laser hair removal, we will familiarize you with the treatment process and give you an information sheet. We will then adjust the laser to your skin type and perform a test treatment.
How is the treatment carried out?You will be treated while comfortably lying down in our certified laser room, wearing laser-protective goggles. The laser assistant will adjust the energy to your skin type and color and, after a few test shots with the handpiece, will gently glide over your skin. Our high-performance medical skin cooling device reduces any pain to a minimum. The laser ensures a constant energy output during the treatment, controlled by computer.
What will I feel during the laser treatment of the legs?
Laser treatment of the legs is usually experienced as slightly unpleasant. Since the skin is cooled with pleasantly cool air during the entire treatment, any pain is reduced to a minimum. At most, you may feel a slight “pinch” when the laser energy is directed into the hair root. If necessary, we will prescribe an anesthetic cream. What side effects can occur after the treatment?
After the laser treatment, redness and small round bumps may appear, which usually disappear completely after a few hours. Often there is a feeling of dryness. In very rare cases, there may be a strong pigmentation or depigmentation of the skin (white spots), which in most cases disappears after about two weeks.
What should I watch out for after laser treatment?
Treat your legs with a moisturizing cream. Especially in summer, be careful not to expose your legs to the sun.
Cost of permanent hair removal
What does it cost to have my legs lasered?
Laser hair removal on the legs costs between CHF 490 and 550 per treatment. Starting from the 7th treatment, you benefit from a 10% discount.
What determines the costs in individual cases?
The exact costs depend on the duration of the individual treatments and the number of treatments required. Both vary depending on skin type, skin color, and the color, density, and thickness of the hair on the legs.
Does health insurance cover laser hair removal on the legs?
No, laser hair removal is generally not a medically necessary procedure. For this reason, you usually have to bear the costs yourself. An exception to this is inflammatory diseases of the hair or hormonal disorders, in which permanent hair removal may be medically necessary. We can also provide a cost reimbursement for these medical indications.
